OpenKM is an Electronic Document and Record Management System (EDRMS).

There's a lot of literature about document management terms such as ECM, EDRMS, ERMS, DM, KM among others, more influenced by marketing rules rather than objective reasons.

However we prefer the term EDRMS, perhaps with lesser success in the marketing world but from our point of view more strict and representative.

OpenKM Document Management System helps you organize, maintain, and govern documents from managers and any person who creates or uses them in their business activities. Control and track the entire life cycle of every document with automation, notifications, and auditing.

OpenKM Records Management helps your organization by efficiently and systematically controlling the creation, reception, maintenance, utilization and disposition of records, including processes for capturing and maintaining evidence of and information about business activities and transactions in the form of records.

The OpenKM Records Management System captures and manages records over time and provides access to them.

The OpenKM Tracking System audits the processes in which time deadlines for actions are monitored and imposed upon those conducting the business.

The OpenKM Disposition is a range of processes associated with implementing records retention, destruction or transfer decisions which are documented in disposition authorities or other instruments. Destruction is the process of eliminating or deleting records, beyond any possible reconstruction.

The OpenKM File Plan is a set of rules that indicate, for each kind of record in the enterprise, where they should be retained, the policies that apply to them, how long they must be retained, how they should be disposed of, and who is responsible for managing them.
